Discovering World Radiotherapy Awareness Day with the Global Coalition for Radiotherapy and Radiotherapy UK, Special Guest Andy Tudor

Radiotherapy UK and the Global Coalition for Radiotherapy hosted an online Coffee & Catch-up Meeting for World Radiotherapy Awareness Day. Darien Laird, GCR Executive Director and Sarah Quinlan, Charity Director, Radiotherapy UK were joined by patient advocate, Andy Tudor (UK).

“I know I’m very lucky that I live in a part of the world where I have access to world class radiotherapy- that doesn’t apply to millions upon millions of people around the world, so that was a shock to me when I went into this world of radiotherapy how there’s inequalities of treatment around the world… because radiotherapy doesn’t just save lives, it saves the quality of lives as well.”- Andy Tudor

Darien Laird and Sarah Quinlan gave an overview of what World Radiotherapy Awareness Day is, including the objectives, the significance of the date chosen, and the theme for the campaign. They each shared why their organisation was involved in this movement.

“This is core to GCR’s Vision. If we improved access to radiotherapy we could save one million more lives, every year. That statistic alone, has all of us passionate and engaged to say ‘let’s come together, let’s make a difference.'” - Darien Laird

Speaking on behalf of Radiotherapy UK, Sarah Quinlan said:

"We believe in the power of patient voices, and the power of the radiotherapy workforce, and bringing that to the decision makers. And for us, World Radiotherapy Awareness Day embodies those same values: it’s about improving access to radiotherapy, and it’s about providing a platform for those who need it to share their stories.” - Sarah Quinlan

Following their remarks, they opened up a discussion where participants asked questions, and shared feedback. We’re grateful to everyone who joined us for this engaging meeting and contributed to the discussion.
