Close the Care Gap?
For World Cancer Day 2022, the Global Coalition for Radiotherapy hosted a Webinar and Roundtable discussion on "How Can Radiotherapy Close the Care Gap?" on Tuesday, 8 February 2022.
GCR members, radiotherapy experts and advocates gathered in a virtual meeting to discuss how remote solutions with treatment planning, service and training expand the reach radiotherapy can have in communities worldwide.
Speakers
Moderator: Professor Pat Price
GCR Co-Founder
Professor Pat Price is an academic clinical oncologist specialising in PET based molecular imaging, advanced radiotherapy techniques, translational research in oncology and medical legal issues in cancer. She is enhancing the uses of radiotherapy in cancer treatment within the UK through her charity, Radiotherapy UK. She founded the Radiotherapy4Life campaign and co-founded the #CatchUpWithCancer campaign. In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Professor Price co-founded the Global Coalition for Radiotherapy to advance her advocacy efforts in cancer care on a global scale.
Speaker: Steve Laws
VP Advanced Oncology Solutions in EMEA, Varian
Steve Laws is the Vice President for Advanced Oncology Solutions in EMEA. With a background in software engineering, he has been with Varian for 18 years in a variety of roles, including software and clinical solution services sales in EMEA and as a lead in the France, Belgium and Luxembourg zone. Laws says his professional passions include the application of technology to support the advancement of patient care, in particular in the field of Oncology. Through extensive travel opportunities, Laws has seen that the challenges of the clinical skills gap, technology adoption and patient access to the best care available are recurring themes. He says with the right technology back with clinical and operational services, he believes care providers can be supported in reaching their goals and secure better outcomes for patients around the world.
Speaker: Paul Naine
Director of Clinical Operations, Elekta
Paul Naine is the Director of Clinical Operations at Elekta. He specializes in high field MRI and NMR spectroscopy, as well as accomplishing an Incorporated Engineer status from the Institute of Medical Engineers. He has used this knowledge to bridge the engineering and clinical divide at Elekta, working on cone-beam imaging projects and MR guided therapy before moving into operations. In his current role, he is responsible for the conceptualization, creation and leadership of a number of high performing teams, including innovative physics and clinical groups. In addition, Naine is active in the professional community, including AAPM and ASRT. His current focus is now on the human-technology interface and how that interface is of critical importance in low- and middle-income countries.
Outcome
Your participation and contributions to the roundtable discussion will help produce a white paper on the innovative and radical remote solutions radiotherapy can provide during a global pandemic and beyond to improve access to radiotherapy for all and so improve cancer survival.

Inequity in cancer care costs lives, and the GCR is a multi-disciplinary collaborative aimed at closing the care gap to create a world where access to quality radiotherapy is universal and equitable.
