The Economist Impact featured a London Global Cancer Week (LGCW) financing cancer services roundtable discussion in its 16 Dec 2025 article “From aid to agency: the new economics of global cancer control.” Amanda Stucke, lead of The Health Dividend at The Economist Impact, attended the LGCW roundtable event and wrote this discussion summary:
“For a disease that will impact one in five people in their lifetime according to the World Health Organisation, this crisis is becoming louder. Behind every budget shortfall sits a delayed diagnosis, a broken machine or a family pushed into poverty.”

The roundtable made clear that with international aid in steep decline, countries must pivot to domestic public financing and stronger economic arguments that resonate with Ministers of Finance and Heads of State.
The Global Coalition for Radiotherapy (GCR) was pleased to be invited to participate in this meeting at London Global Cancer Week. We are leaning into sharpening our 2026 strategy around helping countries build fully budgeted, system-integrated cancer plans and supporting the implementation of high-quality, sustainable radiotherapy programs.
We are grateful to London Global Cancer Week for hosting this event and for inviting GCR representatives as well as other GCR Partners.

Dr. Susannah Stanway discussed LGCW on “In Conversation With” a podcast from The Lancet, where she highlighted some key sessions, including the financing roundtable.
"It’s not just how is cancer care going to be financed that we discussed, but also- as you allude to- around agenda setting and what should be financed."
