Advocacy and What’s Next for Radiotherapy: Prof Pat Price’s interview with Elekta

Updated: Aug 28

In an episode of the podcast series, Elekta’s Spilling the RT,  Professor Price joined Emily Basset to discuss a range of important radiotherapy topics from advanced technology to advocacy.

“I've had a real mission in the last few years, to make sure radiotherapy is out there in the whole of the cancer continuum. It's part of what we do with the Global Coalition for Radiotherapy, is not so much always talking to ourselves, but how we talk out there, how do we talk to the drug industry, how do we talk to national cancer control plans? How do we talk to imaging? So we've got to do two things in radiotherapy, talk to ourselves obviously and optimize it, but we must be getting out there. And I think through research, and through what we're doing with the Global Coalition hopefully, that can actually put radiotherapy in the place with everybody else, which is where it needs to be.”

Price shared the origins of the Global Coalition for Radiotherapy, and how uniting expertise from around the world has led to the emergence of incredible initiatives since its founding: the Radiotherapy Task Force for Areas of Conflict, an Advocacy Toolkit, the GCR RT Essential Standards, and the GCR Resident Partners.

The coalition has been actively working to address global challenges in radiotherapy. Price stated, “It has created a responsive community focused on improving patient care." She emphasized that collaboration within this community serves as a powerful catalyst for innovation, pointing to “the initiative from Katie and Sandra about the World Radiotherapy Awareness Day…it’s been really exciting!”

Thank you to Elekta for providing this platform to feature the work of the GCR, as well as Price’s involvement with the #CatchUpWithCancer campaign by Radiotherapy UK
